80-20 Rule

LUX Magazine 80-20 80-20 Rule

The Pareto Principle aka the 80/20 rule is a rule that dates back quite a while ago. It was first derived in the concept of economics and is often used for many business purposes to this day. The rule states that about 80% of the effects you experience come from 20% of the causes.

That rule can be translated to just about any aspect of life, but works particularly well in the world of fashion. Whether it is applying it to your fashion brand or incorporating it into your personal style, we often want to know what is that 20% for the up and coming fashion stars that we interview. When asked the questions “Think about the 80/20 rule; if you get 80% of your impact from 20% of what you do, what is that 20% for you as it pertains to personal styling and expressing yourself through fashion and design?” or “Where should they focus most of their energy to get the most bang for their proverbial buck,” we come across a variety of responses. Here are some of our favorites!

For me the 20% is your personality. You can put as much effort as you want into how you look or how you dress. However, it’s your personality that will make 80% of the impact, not your clothes. –Sophie Spiegelberger

In my experience, I always tried to stay up to date with trends and what is trending. Right now, I think Instagram is one of the best platforms for getting my brand out there. BRIAVIA has only been live for about 4 Months but has already generated over 8,000+ followers. Most of my sales come through Instagram because it’s the app that is most popular right now. I like to think from a customer’s perspective and really focus on one main platform –Brianna Wu

I love following fashion trends and knowing what’s new, but I’m trying to avoid wearing all fashion trends together from head to toe. I’m trying to integrate a few trends in my current wardrobe and not to lose my personal style. –Martina Manolcheva

The way I carry myself. Anyone can wear anything and look ‘good’ in it. But in order to really pull off anything you have to exude a persona. My own personal style evolves every so often. Right now I’m in a grunge-chic phase. Ex. Leather, distressed skinny jeans, and heels. –Alice Rolf-Chin

Forget the rules, you can’t  calculate into percentages. Personal style will come naturally once you decide who you want to be and start living the lifestyle that you want, for better or worse. –Francis Kenneth
